This is an incredibly exciting time of year for training! As FEAT we have a big couple of months ahead of us and I can't wait. It is the next 5 months that build our amazing culture as a training group. I love the definition of culture that was once said to me; "Culture is simply defined as the way we do things around here". This is so powerful. It gives us complete autonomy to create whatever culture we want, simply through our actions. Before I started taking outdoor training I believed that there were so many limitations to training outside. Not heavyweights, no cardio machines, differing training conditions, unstable footing, winter...
Yet, it wasn't until started working as a trainer and really started to meet my awesome team, that I realised these were (like all limitations) perceived limitations. In fact, I am now a true believer that you can NOT create what we have indoors and actually, the synthetic indoor training environment will always leave participants lacking both physically, philosophically and most importantly, spiritually! When I actually started out, I very quickly learned that it is the weather, training outdoors and being susceptible to the elements that build our community.
From this realization, I came to understand that it is the next few months, between now and the end of August, where our training community really comes together. When you look around at the people training next to you when you come to a session and feel that buzz of the training culture, this is all built in a 5-month window. It is a challenge that builds affiliation and community. I noticed this at the end of Winter FEAT Feast last year. Every year at this event I sit back and just say WOW! How did we get this brilliant group of people who are genuinely invested in each other? The answer is really staring us in the face. Over the next 5 months, we are going to go through something that profoundly impacts your life. If you have not trained through this 5-month window and think I am crazy, then simply ask the people who have done it before. Partner up with someone at training who has seen a couple of winters training.
The next 5 months are amazing and they are amazing because they are not easy. Every morning when the alarm goes off and it is dark, the easy option is to stay in bed, to stay comfortable. I am a big believer that one of the gravest challenges facing humanity is how do we fight comfort. Listen to anyone who has achieved anything in their life. These achievements have NEVER come from the space of comfort. They are always pushing, striving and challenging; deliberate practice requires elements of discomfort. It is the challenge that forces us to grow and connect. That is why you never regret getting up and going to training, you always feel better for it.
We are so lucky to have the added challenge in our training of the natural environment and you will gain more from it than you realise!
That connection to community and nature is where your spiritual growth happens, it is where we start to recognize and understand the purpose and beauty of being human. It is not to sit in our environmentally controlled buildings all day, never having to deal with the natural environment around us. No poet worth reading or song worth listening too has spoken about how good it was to be comfortable indoors and never taking on any challenges in life. In fact, it is the challenge and discomfort that inspires art in all forms!
So, our challenge: Over the next few weeks to the end of March, your challenge is to hit all the sessions that you have committed to. I know you say this is exactly what you're aiming to do week in and week out. But we are aiming to set a routine over the next few weeks. Because when April hits we are upping the game. We are starting now to build the routine now and in April we are going to be aiming to add that extra session on to our training.
We are going to embrace our 5-month window and really push to grow. I promise that when we commit to this, our community strength will next level and my second promise is that you will be powering through your training aspirations, riding off the strength of the community. Your success is the communities success and the communities success is your success. So help each other out, because you won't be achieving your full capacity unless the people on your right and left are achieving to their full capacity!
